Colourful kids raise $15,000

By Adam Norris

The efforts of Urunga Public School children were rewarded this week following a March 18 Colour Run that transformed a damp afternoon into a rainbow riot.

The school’s P&C Association organised the event, which saw the majority of students undertake fundraising that generated $15,683 for future school projects.

“It was a complete parent and volunteer initiative, which is amazing,” said Community Liaison Officer Laura McGrath.

“The majority of the P&C are parents, with some grandparents in there as well, and this was all through them. The committee had been looking at opportunities for different fundraising events throughout the year to ensure they could support all the different things that the school does.”

“So recently they committed to funding every single child to do the Life Education Program with Healthy Harold, so no one has to pay for that. They support the school swimming scheme, the school camps, and they did an amazing job organising this Colour Run.”

“So now they’re looking at new sports equipment, and wish-lists that each class puts together.”

Every UPS student was involved in the event, and while the school recognises that they achieved a great fundraising result, they are also happy that the children were able to participate in a fun and memorable event – which included several teachers dunked with vivid green slime as a reward.

“If [the kids] raised a certain amount, they then choose from a number of prizes from an online platform. So there are lots of happy kids out there now, all from their hard work fundraising.”

“The whole thing was actually amazing. [The P&C] are thinking it might run every second year, so it’s not something the kids just expect every time. It’s something to build up to, to keeps that interest and fun going while also looking at other exciting events in the off year.”

“It was one of those things, where you look around and feel so proud at being in such an incredible community.”
